The drug's novel pharmaceutical design exploits osmosis, a naturally occurring process, as a means of propelling the active ingredient.
Osmotic pump technology enables the movement of an external liquid into the bottom layer of the pill; when the volume of the liquid increases, the active pharmaceutical ingredient is released from the tablet through holes drilled with a laser into the tablet’s semipermeable film coating. The manufacturing process is fully automated and patent independent, thus making the medicine accessible to a wider circle of patients.
