Slovenian students from the Ljubljana Biotechnical Education Center are among the 10 finalists of the NASA Hunch Culinary Challenge. The NASA Hunch program was designed to give high school students new experiences by developing and producing various items used on the International Space Station. Last year NASA started to collaborate with Worldchefs, a global network of chefs’ associations, for the Astronaut Culinary Challenge, an endeavor to create space friendly cuisine.
The Slovenian team were the only Europeans to get into the finals with their barley stew, a traditional Slovenian dish, which was carefully adapted to the strict nutritional guidelines needed for space exploration. The competition final will be held in Houston in April. The winning entry will be processed by the Johnson Space Centre Food Lab and sent to the International Space Station.
