Researchers at Slovenia's largest hospital have achieved a medical breakthrough by proving that an autoimmune disease can be treated by eliminating its underlying trigger.
Until now, autoimmune diseases have usually been treated by suppressing the patient's immune system. Researchers at UMC Ljubljana, the largest hospital in Slovenia, have demonstrated a new treatment approach for autoimmune disease by targeting and removing its underlying trigger. Published in the New England Journal of Medicine, the world-first trial used a recombinant enzyme to treat a patient with severe lupus. This paradigm shift could open up an entirely new market for safer, highly targeted biotech therapies, disrupting traditional lifelong drug regimens.
