Space exploration offers many opportunities for Slovenia’s niche tech leaders.
The partnership agreement between Slovenia and the European Space Agency in 2016 was far from being just a formality. It marked a true milestone in the development of Slovenian space exploration technologies. The latest sector analysis published by The Ministry of Economic Development and Technology identified 30 companies developing technologies relevant to space exploration. Many of these companies are tech niche leaders. Several are already taking part in ESA's research programs.
The study pointed out »pockets of excellence« in areas like electro-magnetic technologies, midstream services (ground stations), and downstream earth observation products. In 2020 Slovenia launched its first two microsatellites. A latecomer among the developed nations – yet the satellites integrated locally developed know how and are a demonstration of Slovenian space tech. One of the satellites is based on a platform developed by SkyLabs, a turnkey satellite tech provider developing highly miniaturized on-board data solutions with elements hardened to withstand the extreme conditions found in space.
Many Slovenian SME’s excel in measurement technologies, in acquisition of remote data and AI-based analysis techniques. Dewesoft already provides its measurement solutions to NASA. The programs of companies like Instrumentation Technologies, X-Lab, Cosylab, or Arctur are also highly relevant in the context of space exploration. Several smaller local companies specialize in earth observing technologies often paired with AI-based analysis. GeoCodis, Flycom, Bias Variance, and C-Astral are just a few examples. STN operates a “leading global teleport facility which provides satellite, broadcast, connectivity, and co-location services”. Other companies involved in space exploration programs include – among others - electronic components providers, developers of advanced materials or nanoparticles, prototype makers and manufacturers of components using additive technologies, or prefabricated buildings and domes constructors.
