Slovenia is getting a new centre-right government
On 22 May 2026, Slovenia’s parliament officially elected Janez Janša as the new Prime Minister, marking the formation of a new centre-right coalition government. The coalition, formed by several centre-right parties, won a majority in parliament in the elections held in late March. Janez Janša, considered by many to be a controversial figure, is a veteran of Slovenian politics. This is the fourth time he has held the office, after previously serving as defence minister during the Slovenian independence war in 1991. The new Prime Minister promised a shift away from the left-wing policies of the previous government, with priorities focused on economic development, decentralisation, and the fight against red tape and corruption.
On 4 June 2026, Parliament approved Janez Janša’s fourth government.
