Slovenia and the UK discuss cooperation in the defence industry

Slovenia and the United Kingdom discussed ways to promote cooperation in the defence sector on 21 May 2024 at an event in Ljubljana, the Slovenian-British Defence Industry Day.

Cooperation between Slovenia and the UK in the defence sector must be strengthened in order to further improve the security of both countries and Europe, said Željko Kralj, Head of the Logistics Department at the Ministry of Defence. Given the tense situation in Europe and the world, this is seen as a must.

The rapidly changing security situation requires advanced technology, expertise and a joint approach to dealing with threats, said Matej Skočir from the Directorate for Industry, Entrepreneurship and Internationalisation at the Ministry of Economy, Tourism and Sport.

Slovenia has a growing defence industry, which is one of the driving forces for the development of cutting-edge technology, Skočir said. Slovenian companies are leaders in many areas and participate very successfully in EU projects, he added.

John Mark Lancaster, member of the British House of Lords and member of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, emphasised the importance of cooperation between the UK and Slovenia for common European security. The two countries work together successfully in various NATO missions around the world, so nothing stands in the way of successful cooperation on a bilateral level, he said.

The Slovenian-British Defence Industry Day was organised by SPIRIT Slovenia Business Development Agency in cooperation with the Ministry of Economy, the Slovenian Defence Industry Cluster and the British and Northern Ireland Embassy to Slovenia.
