Breakthrough new battery technology developed by Slovenian scientists

Researchers at the National Institute of Chemistry have developed a new battery solution based on magnesium — potentially a breakthrough technology.

Magnesium batteries offer advantages over lithium batteries, including higher theoretical volumetric energy density, abundant availability, and lower raw material costs. The Laboratory for Modern Battery Systems at the National Institute of Chemistry in Ljubljana has demonstrated that adding a small amount of fluorinated additive to magnesium battery electrolytes enables the use of higher-voltage organic cathodes with metallic magnesium anodes. The new solution improves magnesium anode performance by enhancing efficiency, extending battery life, and increasing stability.

The findings were published in the journal Advanced Energy Materials.
