The environment has deteriorated but the performance of banking and insurance sectors remains solid in 2024. This trend continues in 2025.
According to the Bank of Slovenia, the banks have strengthened “their already high resilience to various risks”. The bank assets have increased by 2.2 percent to 54.2 billion euros. Pre-tax profits amounted to 1.2 billion euros – 5.5 percent over 2023 result. “Liquidity remains well above the regulatory requirement and is among the highest in the euro area;” states the annual report of the Bank of Slovenia. The banking sector has also continued to consolidate. After the merger of the two major Slovenian banks in 2023, two thirds of the market was controlled by the two largest banking groups, Slovenian NLB and Hungarian OTP. In the first 8 months of 2025, the assets grew by an additional 4.9 percent on a year-to-year basis.

The insurance companies recorded 2.5 billion euros of premiums last year and paid out around 1.5 billion in claims. That is significantly below the 2023 figures: the drop in premiums was close to 12 percent while the drop in claims was almost 29 percent. The main reason was the government’s decision to replace the voluntary health insurance with compulsory health contributions collected by the state. Slovenia's 2024 insurance market comprised 12 locally based companies and 9 branches. The top four insurers dominated, accounting for more than 80% of gross premiums and claims. Zavarovalnica Triglav remains the strongest player both in Slovenia and in the wider region of Southeastern Europe, with an almost 50 percent share of the home market. In 2025, the insurance market continues to perform solidly. Triglav has managed to increase the volume of operations by 18 percent, while net profits increased by 21 percent in the first six months.
