Each year, Slovenia’s foremost daily newspapers recognize the country’s most dynamic small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), fastest-growing companies, and visionary entrepreneurs. Last year’s Golden Gazelle Award for the fastest-growing company was awarded to Docentric, an IT firm specializing in advanced reporting and document automation solutions. As a certified Microsoft Solutions Partner, Docentric achieved an extraordinary 800% growth over five years. While still modest in size, with revenues reaching €6.9 million in 2024, the company’s cutting-edge solutions have earned the confidence of global consulting giants such as Accenture, Deloitte, KPMG, and technology leader Konica Minolta. The Silver Gazelle Award went to Jafral, an innovative biotech company and the world’s leading manufacturer of bacteriophages, a promising alternative to antibiotics. The Bronze Gazelle Award was won by Acryform, Slovenia’s second-largest supplier of acrylic windows for the recreational vehicle market.
The Gazelle Awards, presented by the daily newspaper Dnevnik, complement the Entrepreneurial Stars awards hosted by Slovenia’s largest daily newspaper, Delo. The latest winner among small enterprises was Bird Buddy Studio, whose product is an AI-powered, automated bird feeder with an integrated camera. This smart device uses artificial intelligence to identify bird species visiting the feeder and sends real-time notifications to users’ smartphones. Bird Buddy’s innovative approach has earned multiple international awards and attracted coverage from prominent global media outlets, including CNN and The New York Times.
Among larger companies, the entrepreneurial award was presented to Ledinek Engineering, a well-established developer of sophisticated wood-processing machinery. Other notable finalists in Delo’s awards included biotech innovator Acies Bio, family-owned specialized furniture manufacturer Bobič Yacht Interior, beekeeping equipment producer Logar Trade, sustainable plant-care chemical manufacturer Unichem, energy solutions developer NGEN, and TAB, a leading producer of industrial and automotive batteries.
Despite operating in diverse sectors, Slovenia’s top entrepreneurs share key characteristics: a strong focus on niche markets, leadership in specialized technological fields, and a relentless commitment to innovation. These strengths are reflected in Slovenian SMEs’ ranking on the European Innovation Scoreboard. Slovenian SMEs rank 6th among European innovators, 5th in product innovation introduction, and 2nd in exports of medium- and high-tech products. In sum, entrepreneurial SMEs and family businesses are not just contributors but the backbone of Slovenia’s economy, driving growth, innovation, and international competitiveness.
