In May the Slovenian National Assembly adopted a resolution on the long term usage of nuclear energy. The resolution, titled Nuclear Energy for Slovenia’s Future, is an important step towards the construction of the second unit of the nuclear plant in Krško. The present facility with the capacity of 700 MW was built by US Westinghouse in 1983 and is expected to operate until 2043 when it will be in effect replaced by the new plant. The second unit could have a capacity exceeding 2,000 MW. The resolution was supported by most parliamentary parties and will also be tested in a consultative referendum expected to take place in November.
