Ljubljana, 12 April (STA) - Total tourism consumption in Slovenia recovered to pre-pandemic levels in 2022 and 2023 and tourism contributed 5.2% to the country's GDP in 2023, discounting multiplier effects, data from the Statistic Office shows.
Total tourism consumption amounted to EUR 5.7 billion in 2022 and EUR 6.7 billion in 2023 with foreign visitors contributing EUR 2.9 billion and EUR 3.3 billion, respectively.
Total tourism expenditure rose to EUR 5.6 billion in 2022, increasing by 16% in nominal terms in 2023 to EUR 6.6 billion. Other components of tourism consumption were estimated at EUR 83 million and EUR 89 million, respectively.
In both years, expenditure of foreign visitors represented around 63% of total tourism expenditure, amounting to EUR 3.5 billion in 2022 and EUR 4.1 billion in 2023.
Tourism expenditure of Slovenian residents includes expenditure on trips at home and the domestic part of expenditure on the trips abroad. Expenditure on trips in Slovenia represented 86% and 82% of total expenditure of domestic visitors, respectively, in 2022 and 2023.
Tourism expenditure of Slovenian residents travelling abroad was estimated at EUR 1.7 billion in 2022 and EUR 2.6 billion in 2023. Along with what they spent in Slovenia for those travels their expenditure totalled EUR 2 billion in 2022 and EUR 3.1 billion in 2023.
Based on the shares that local producers have in the supply of individual groups of tourism products, tourism value added amounted to EUR 1.9 billion in 2022, representing 3.7% of total value added in the economy, and increased to EUR 2.2 billion, or 3.8% of total value added.
In addition to value added, tourism (direct) GDP also includes net taxes on expenditure for tourism goods and services. Taking into account all taxes paid as a consequence of tourism consumption, tourism GDP amounted to EUR 2.9 billion in 2022 and EUR 3.3 billion in 2023, representing 5% and 5.2% of total GDP, respectively.
Including multiplier effects, the calculated total value added that was the consequence of tourism consumption amounted to EUR 3.5 billion in 2022 or 7% of the total added value of the economy and EUR 4.1 billion or 7.2% in 2023.
The calculated total GDP that was the consequence of tourism consumption amounted to EUR 4.7 billion in 2022 and EUR 5.5 billion in 2023, accounting for 8.3% and 8.6%, respectively, of entire GDP.
