Ljubljana, 07 January (STA) - The retailer Spar Slovenija has started expanding a warehouse for fresh products as part of its distribution centre in Letališka Road near the BTC shopping district in eastern Ljubljana. After the project is completed, the new warehouse will span on 26,000 square metres, the company announced on Tuesday.
Announcing the investment, the retailer that is fully owned by ASPIAG Management, a company registered in Switzerland, said it was one of the largest infrastructure investments in the retail sector in recent years.
The Spar distribution centre in Letališka Road currently spans 43,000 square metres, of which 29,000 square meters are intended for storage of non-refrigerated products.
The existing warehouse for fresh products measures 14,000 square meters, and after the planned expansion it will measure 26,000 square metres.
The entire expansion, worth EUR 40 million, will result in an additional 20,000 square metres of space, with the rest of it to be used for a parking garage for the employees and state-of-the-art technical and working premises, Spar Slovenija said.
Several contractors have been hired, with the main contractor and the designer coming from Slovenia, the company said, adding that the project is expected to be completed in the first half of 2026.
Spar Slovenija recorded EUR 1.2 billion in gross turnover in 2023, a 13.6% increase year-on-year, while pre-tax profit amounted to EUR 21.6 million.
At the end of 2023, it operated 115 Spar and Interspar shops, 22 franchise shops and nine Interspar restaurants in Slovenia.
Spar Slovenija's market share also increased by 0.8 percentage points to 21.7% in 2023, and the number of its employees increased by 2.5% to 5,260.
