Slovenia's exports up by almost 12% last year, imports up 21%

Ljubljana, 04 February (STA) - Slovenia's exports increased by 11.8% to EUR 61.5 billion and imports were up 21.1% to EUR 69.1 billion in 2024. Trade with both EU and non-EU countries was up. A trade deficit of EUR 7.6 billion was recorded and the export-import ratio was 89%, the Statistics Office said on Tuesday.


Slovenia exported EUR 30.9 billion worth of goods to EU countries or 1.1% more than in 2023, and imported EUR 32.3 billion or 0.8% more from this group of countries.

Exports to non-EU countries increased by 25.1% to EUR 30.5 billion and imports from these countries were up by 47% to EUR 36.8 billion.

Excluding processing activities, exports to non-EU countries grew by 3.6% to EUR 10.3 billion and imports from there were up by 1.1% to EUR 9.2 billion.

Slovenia's most important export markets in 2024 were Switzerland, Germany, Croatia, Italy, and Austria. In the same period, Slovenia imported most goods from Switzerland, Germany, China, India and Italy. Compared to 2023, exports to Switzerland and imports from India were up the most.

The most traded group of products was chemicals and related products. They accounted for 45.6% of the total exports and 49.5% of total imports. The latter share doubled compared to 2023.

This was followed by machinery and transport equipment (24.3% of exports and 19.3% of imports), manufactured goods classified chiefly by material (12.7% of exports and 10.3% of imports), miscellaneous manufactured articles (6.8% of exports and 5.8% of imports) and mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials (4.7% of exports and 6.9% of imports).

For the fifth month in a row, a monthly trade deficit was recorded in external trade in goods in December 2024. It amounted EUR 0.9 billion, while the export-import ratio was 84%.

In December, exports were up by 17.7% to EUR 4.6 billion and imports increased by 39.7% to EUR 5.5 billion.
