Ljubljana, 23 May (STA) - Nearly 3.5 million overnight stays by tourists were recorded in the first four months of 2025, a 4% year-on-year increase, and almost 1.4 million arrivals, up 6%. The trend was highlighted by a record-breaking April, which registered the highest ever number of overnight stays for the month to date, show data by the Statistics Office.
In April alone, tourist accommodation providers logged approximately 1.14 million overnight stays, marking a 21.8% rise year-on-year. Tourist arrivals in April surged by 22.5% to around 490,300.
Foreign visitors were the main drivers of April's growth, with their arrivals climbing by 31% to 379,300 and their overnight stays increasing by nearly 30% to 846,700.
Ljubljana, Piran, and Bled were particularly popular, accounting for almost half of all foreign stays, with the capital seeing a 28%, Piran a notable 48% increase, and Bled a 31% jump in foreign overnight stays compared to April 2024.
Italian guests contributed the most foreign stays (almost 120,000), followed by Germans (105,000) and Austrians (92,000). Significant year-on-year increases in April stays were seen from Hungarian tourists (almost doubling), Germans (+46%), and Austrians (+42%).
Overall in April, overnight stays were fairly evenly distributed among mountain resorts, spa resorts, and Ljubljana, each accounting for roughly 21% of the total, with coastal areas attracting a fifth. Hotels remained the most popular accommodation, accounting for 53% of all stays.
Looking at the cumulative figures for January to April, foreign tourists accounted for the majority or 65% of all overnight stays, totalling nearly 2.3 million, a 7% increase . Italian visitors were the most numerous, ahead of those from Croatia and Austria.
Domestic tourists generated 1.2 million overnight stays in the first four months, a slight, 1% decrease compared to the same period in 2024.
