Railway infrastructure around Borovnica gets major facelift

Borovnica, 03 June (STA) - The railway station in Borovnica, some 20km southwest of Ljubljana, has got a major upgrade in a EUR 112 million investment, VAT included. The project, which was inaugurated on Tuesday, began in September 2022 and received EUR 44.5 million in EU resilience and recovery grants.

The station now boasts a more robust infrastructure, enhancing its functionality, increasing safety levels and improving flexibility and traffic capacity, Infrastructure Minister Alenka Bratušek said at the inauguration event.

Apart from a major overhaul of the railway station and its surroundings, including some 3 kilometres of tracks, an underpass fitted with two lifts was built to ensure safer access to the platforms.

The building of the train station was also renovated, including its facade, waiting area and toilettes, while noise barriers were also erected, Bratušek said.

The investment also included upgrades to railway sections between Brezovica and Preserje in both directions, with nearly 17 kilometres of existing tracks and nearly 17 kilometres of overhead lines overhauled.

Notranje Gorice, another railway station in the municipality of Borovnica, was also renovated. It has new platform infrastructure, better signal safety devices, and noise barriers.

Bratušek said that public procurement was underway for the remaining sections between Brezovica and Borovnica, which includes upgrades to the Brezovica and Preserje railway stations, and a new underpass with a stop in Vnanje Gorice.

The ceremony was also attended by Jerneja Jug Jerše, head of the European Commission Representation in Slovenia, who said the EU funds had been well spent on the project.

"Transport is a pillar of the economy, society and the environment, and the European Commission is fully aware of this."

The Borovnica station is the fifth railway project from the country's recovery and resilience plan to be successfully completed after the railway stations in Grosuplje, Domžale, Radovljica and Nova Gorica.
