Beltinci, 22 April (STA) - Agri-food group Panvita has launched production in the country's most technologically advanced greenhouse in Nemščak, NE, where it expects to grow around four million heads of lettuce per year.
The EUR 9 million greenhouse uses a sophisticated cultivation system and movable growing areas. The microclimatic conditions inside can be regulated for optimal growth and year-round vegetable production.
The greenhouse spans 21,000 m2 and has around two hectares of growing areas. It can fit up to 360,000 plants and 260,000 seedlings.
Staring the production in the new greenhouse is an important milestone for Panvita and it fulfils a commitment to invest in sustainable and innovative agriculture, Panvita director Branko Virag said in a press release on Tuesday.
The project does not only make locally grown, fresh and safe food more accessible, it also decreases import dependency and strengthens food security and self-sufficiency, according to him.
Panvita is one of the most important agri-food groups in Slovenia, employing 700 people and cultivating more than 3,500 hectares of land.
A 51% stake of Panvita was sold last year to Croatia's Bosqar for EUR 50 million, raising concerns over Slovenia's food security and self-sufficiency.
