Ministry approves EUR 64.5m in EU-backed subsidies for solar and wind power expansion

Ljubljana, 03 June (STA) - In the latest effort to boost Slovenia's renewable energy goals, the Cohesion and Regional Development Ministry approved on Tuesday EUR 64.5 million in EU funding for new solar and wind power installations. The call for co-financing new renewable energy facilities will open Friday and run through 2029.

The funding, EUR 63.5 million of which comes from EU sources, represents the latest tranche in Slovenia's renewable energy programme. Earlier this year, the ministry approved European funding for a call for the co-financing of investments in community self-supply of electricity from renewable energy sources for the period 2025-2027.

The initiative aims to increase Slovenia's renewable electricity generation whilst reducing dependence on fossil fuels. Notably, the programme includes provisions for energy storage infrastructure, the ministry said.

"With this call, Slovenia continues to implement the goals of the green transition and commitments to climate neutrality, supported by European cohesion policy," the press release says.

The funding comes as Slovenia implements its updated National Energy and Climate Plan, adopted in December 2024, which sets ambitious targets including a 55% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.

The plan earmarks approximately EUR 3.8 billion for distributed electricity generation from renewable energy sources as part of a broader EUR 22 billion investment programme in energy and climate measures through 2030.

Slovenia, which declared carbon neutrality goals by 2050 in 2020, currently targets at least a 27% renewable energy share in total consumption by 2030. The country successfully met its 2023 target of 25%, up from 21% in 2018.

The government estimates it will need around EUR 1 billion annually in incentives to achieve its climate targets, though officials say sufficient national and EU resources are available to bridge this funding gap.
