Ljubljana, 25 September (STA) - Slovenia's general government deficit in 2023 has been revised to EUR 1.64 billion, which is EUR 88 million or 5.6% more than the initial estimate of the Statistics Office from April. As a share of gross domestic product (GDP), it increased by 0.1 percentage points to 2.6%, which is 0.4 points below the 2022 level.
The increase in the general government deficit in 2023 is mostly attributed to the updated data on expenditure on subsidies related to the mitigation of the energy crisis, the Statistics Office said on Wednesday as it published the revision.
It is part of a regular overview for the period from 2020, which established that the deficit 7.7% of GDP in 2020 (revised by 0.1 percentage points), and 4.6% and 3% of GDP in 2021 and 2022, respectively (no revision).
In 2023, only the central government generated a deficit (EUR 1.724 billion), while the municipalities recorded a combined surplus of EUR 62 million, and the pension and health insurance funds generated a surplus of EUR 22 million.
