AirBaltic to link Ljubljana and Gran Canaria

Ljubljana, 03 June (STA) - The Latvian airline AirBaltic will launch direct flights between Ljubljana and the Gran Canaria island in autumn. The first flight is scheduled for 25 October, followed by flights every Friday until end of March, the airline said.

AirBaltic vice president of network development Mantas Vrubliauskas said that the route will fill a clear gap in the market and allow Slovenian passengers to travel to the Canary Islands easily and comfortably. "We remain committed to strengthening connectivity from Slovenia," he said.

General director of Fraport Slovenia, the Ljubljana Airport operator, Babett Stapel welcomed AirBaltic's decision. "Gran Canaria is a popular holiday destination for many Slovenians. The flights will start just before school holidays in October and will offer a practical travel opportunity in the autumn and winter season," she said.

AirBaltic's fleet is one of the youngest in Europe and composed of 50 Airbus A220-300 planes, the airline said, adding that they are working to double the size of the fleet.

AirBaltic is also providing flights between Ljubljana and Riga. It secured the route through a state subsidy scheme to boost Slovenia's air connectivity.

Currently the eighth call to boost Slovenia's air connectivity is ongoing and two airlines have applied. In May the newspaper Delo quoted unofficial information in reporting that the two new potential connections with the capital were with Albania's capital Tirana and Las Palmas on Gran Canaria, Spain.

The ministry told the STA that both airlines had to amend their applications, which have to be submitted by Wednesday. A commission will meet to review them on Thursday.

Under the scheme, the state subsidises 50% of the airport charge at the country's three international airports - Ljubljana Airport and the two in Maribor and Portorož. So far, just over EUR 494,000 of the EUR 16.8 million available has been used to create connections with Luxembourg (Luxair), Riga (Airbaltic), Copenhagen (Norwegian), Madrid (Iberia) and Düsseldorf (Eurowings).
